Your gifts, joined with the gifts of hundreds of fellow guardians, will support education programs, habitat restoration, sustainable agriculture, and the political fight against big agribusiness and for local, sustainable community solutions.  As Guardians, you and your friends will take a stand and not let another natural resource be driven into extinction.

You can designate as many Mangrove Guardians as you’d like.  Simply go to our donate page or contact us and indicate the number of friends you are making Mangrove Guardians.

For each donation of $15, you will be sent a beautiful card to give to your friend, honoring them as a guardian of the mangrove forest.  Instead of a plastic toy or a new ballpoint pen, your gift lets friends and family join with people in another country as they save their homes and protect our world.

Why Protect the Mangroves?

The mangroves are a tall forest that stand strong in the sea.  These coastal wetland trees protect communities from hurricanes and store massive amounts of carbon, protecting our planet from climate change.  Now they need our protection and you can help.

Half of the world’s mangroves have vanished. And the mangrove forest in the Bay of Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve of El Salvador, the largest in Central America, is threatened with extinction. This ecosystem provides a fertile habitat for fish, shrimp and the most endangered sea turtle species in the world, the Eastern Pacific Hawksbill. But the mangroves are being killed. They are threatened by illegal logging, the expansion of sugar cane plantations, soil erosion, and dynamite used for fishing.

Local Salvadoran fishermen and women, youth, farmers and elders are rising up against the destruction of the forest. They are guarding the strong roots and the tall arms of the mangroves.  They are changing their farming practices to reduce pesticide damage and soil erosion. They patrol the forests every day to guard them against chainsaws and bombs.

You can inspire your friends and loved ones to stand alongside people working to protect the mangrove forests, even from afar.  Make them Mangrove Guardians.

Thank you for giving a gift that supports local communities and our global environment.
