Witness effective community organizing in action.

Tentative Itinerary

Girl with Jug

Arrive in El Salvador at 8:30 pm. Spend the night at the Pato Canales hotel, 5 minutes from the airport.

Monday, November 11th

After breakfast, travel 1.5 hours to Ciudad Romero. Visit murals that depict the community's moving history of struggle and survival. Afternoon: Meet with community leaders for overview of programs. Visit a women's cashew roasting cooperative.  In the evening, meet the charismatic young programmers at Mangrove Radio. Stay in Ciudad Romero.

Tuesday, November 12th

Today we will go to San Salvador to meet with legislators and community activists affiliated with La Coordinadora to learn about key national issues that the communities face, and their visionary work to generate government policies that favor locally led, ecologically-sound community development.  Spend the night at a hotel in San Salvador.

Wednesday, November 13th

We will travel to Puerto Parada to visit with Women in Action, a new rural organization of 300 women just beginning to take leadership.   In the afternoon we will return to Ciudad Romero to explore issues of climate change, food sovereignty and diversified agricultural production.  Spend the night in Ciudad Romero.

Thursday, November 14th

Today we will visit conservation projects in the Bay of Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve with the local Mangrove Guardians. We will start by visiting the new environmental education center in Las Mesitas.  After a short drive we will hike out to a mangrove forest restoration site -- the only one of its kind in El Salvador.   After our hike, tides permitting, we will take a boat ride through the Izcanal area, a beautiful channel protected by community environmental regulations, to the small village of Isla de Montecristo. We will eat a late lunch at the home of a community leader and then head out to the beach to visit a sea turtle hatchery and take a dip in the ocean.  If any turtles have hatched we will release them into the ocean, and then head back to Ciudad Romero for our last night in the community.

Friday, November 15th
